The Spiritual Doctrine of Fascism
- Fascism is defined as a synthesis of action and doctrine, where political practice is inseparable from a higher historical and philosophical truth.
- The ideology rejects individualistic materialism and the pursuit of selfish pleasure in favor of a life defined by duty, self-sacrifice, and national mission.
- It positions itself as a spiritual reaction against 19th-century positivism, asserting that man must use his free will to actively create his own world.
- Life is viewed as a constant struggle requiring physical, moral, and intellectual fitness to achieve a worthy place in the nation and the world.
- The doctrine emphasizes the ethical value of work and education, viewing all human activities as subject to moral judgment and spiritual responsibility.
- Fascism demands an austere and serious existence, explicitly disdaining the concept of an 'easy' life in favor of one sustained by moral forces.
The Fascist disdains an “easy” life.
The Totalitarian Spiritual State
- Fascism defines itself as a comprehensive system of thought that views man as a spiritual entity existing only through historical and social participation.
- The ideology rejects 18th-century materialism and the pursuit of earthly happiness, viewing life as a process of continual flux and evolution.
- Individual interests are only valid when they coincide with the State, which is framed as the universal conscience and will of the people.
- Classical liberalism is dismissed as an exhausted historical reaction that mistakenly prioritized the individual over the collective essence of the State.
- The Fascist State is described as 'totalitarian,' claiming that no human or spiritual values can exist or have meaning outside of its all-embracing structure.
- Socialism and trade unionism are rejected as divisive class-based systems, intended to be replaced by a corporative system that harmonizes interests within the State.
The Fascist conception of the State is all embracing; outside of it no human or spiritual values can exist, much less have value.
The Ethical Fascist State
- The State is defined as the creator of the nation, reversing the traditional view that a pre-existing ethnic group forms a government.
- True democracy is reinterpreted as a qualitative force where the will of a few, or even one, represents the ethical conscience of the whole.
- The State must be an expansive power that proves its universal character through growth, as inactivity is equated with political death.
- Fascism acts as a spiritual educator, aiming to refashion the character, faith, and soul of the individual through discipline.
- The doctrine rejects the liberal idea of the State as a mere mechanical enforcer of peace, viewing it instead as an inward rule of conduct.
It stands for a principle which becomes the central motive of man as a member of civilized society, sinking deep down into his personality; it dwells in the heart of the man of action and of the thinker, of the artist and of the man of science: soul of the soul.
The Genesis of Action
- The author asserts that Fascism originated not from a desk-drafted doctrine but from a practical necessity for action following World War I.
- He describes his transition from Socialism, arguing that the movement had become a 'dead' doctrine fueled only by grudges and resentment toward war supporters.
- Fascism is defined in its early years as an 'anti-party' and a movement focused on the 'producers' rather than traditional political structures.
- The text highlights the influence of Sorel, Peguy, and Italian syndicalists in shaping the movement's early intellectual currents.
- Early Fascist goals included challenging the bourgeoisie and encouraging the working class to accept the responsibilities of industrial management.
- The concept of the 'guild' or 'corporazione' is identified as a foundational element present from the movement's first assembly at Piazza San Sepolcro.
Fascism was not the nursling of a doctrine previously drafted at a desk; it was born of the need of action, and was action; it was not a party but, in the first two years, an anti-party and a movement.
The Doctrine of Struggle
- Fascism prioritizes a decisive faith and the willingness to die over a pre-established, formal academic system.
- The movement's doctrinal foundations were forged through violent action and 'punitive expeditions' rather than quiet study.
- Fascism explicitly rejects perpetual peace and pacifism, viewing them as cloaks for cowardice and renunciation.
- War is characterized as the ultimate test of human energy, bestowing nobility upon those with the courage to face it.
- The motto 'me ne frego' (I don't care a damn) represents a stoic fighting spirit that accepts all risks for the sake of duty and conquest.
- Internationalist structures like the League of Nations are dismissed as fragile constructs that fail when national interests are stirred.
War alone keys up all human energies to their maximum tension and sets the seal of nobility on those peoples who have the courage to face it.
Fascism Against Materialism and Democracy
- Fascism rejects the Marxist doctrine of historical materialism, arguing that economic factors alone cannot explain the complexities of human history.
- The ideology emphasizes the importance of sanctity and heroism, championing human actions driven by spiritual or nationalistic motives rather than economic gain.
- It denies the inevitability and centrality of the class struggle, viewing it as a reductive interpretation of social transformation.
- Fascism repudiates the equation of material well-being with happiness, suggesting such a view reduces humans to a mere vegetative, animalistic existence.
- The text attacks democratic principles, asserting that the 'right of numbers' and universal suffrage are mechanical devices that fail to account for the natural inequality of men.
- It characterizes democracy as a deceptive system where true sovereignty is hidden behind 'irresponsible and secret forces' rather than the will of the people.
Fascism denies the equation: well-being = happiness, which sees in men mere animals, content when they can feed and fatten, thus reducing them to a vegetative existence pure and simple.
The Rejection of Liberalism
- Fascism views the debate between monarchy and republic as obsolete, arguing that social progress can occur under either system.
- The text cites Renan to argue that democracy risks cultural extinction by prioritizing individual vulgarity over the needs of the species.
- Fascism explicitly rejects political egalitarianism and the 'myth' of indefinite progress, favoring collective responsibility over individual liberty.
- The author redefines Fascism as an 'organized, centralized, authoritarian democracy' where the masses are integrated into the State.
- Liberalism is characterized as a short-lived 19th-century reaction that quickly declined after the revolutionary peak of 1848.
- Historical examples like Bismarck’s Germany and the unification of Italy are used to demonstrate that national greatness is achieved through illiberal means.
The maxim that society exists only for the well-being and freedom of the individuals composing it does not seem to be in conformity with nature’s plans, which care only for the species and seem ready to sacrifice the individual.
The Twilight of Liberalism
- The author argues that the liberal century has ended, claiming its agnosticism in economics and politics led the world toward ruin.
- Fascism is presented as a necessary successor that rejects the 'Gordian Knots' of individualism in favor of collective state authority.
- While rejecting liberalism and socialism, Fascism claims to preserve 'acquired facts' of history rather than returning to pre-1789 monarchical absolutism.
- The text defines the 20th century as the 'collective century,' shifting focus from the rights of the individual to the power of the State.
- Fascism is described as a pragmatic 'will to power' that adapts vital elements from past doctrines to meet the needs of a new era.
Were the Gods of liberalism thirsting for blood?
The Absolute Fascist State
- The Fascist doctrine posits the State as an absolute entity, while individuals and groups are considered merely relative and subordinate to it.
- Unlike the liberal 'night watchman' State that merely records results, the Fascist State is an active, ethical will that directs the community's moral and material progress.
- The State is viewed as a spiritual entity that transcends time, linking the past and future while safeguarding the nation's language, faith, and customs.
- Fascism rejects the liberal ideal of a 'lazy' or diminishing government, arguing that modern economic crises necessitate constant state intervention.
- The ultimate manifestation of the State's power is described as leading humanity from primitive tribalism toward the heights of imperial rule.
The State is not only the present; it is also the past and above all the future.
The Organic Fascist State
- The Fascist State seeks to be a strong, organic entity that integrates political, economic, and spiritual forces into a unified national structure.
- It rejects the 'tyrannical' label, arguing that the individual is not crushed but rather 'multiplied' in energy by serving the collective goals of the State.
- The State claims the sole right to determine which liberties are essential and which are 'useless or harmful,' removing the individual's power of judgment.
- Fascism maintains a moral code that respects and protects religious tradition, specifically Roman Catholicism, as a vital spiritual manifestation.
- Imperialism is defined as a spiritual and ethical drive for national expansion and vitality, rather than just territorial conquest.
- The doctrine demands absolute discipline and self-sacrifice, justifying severity against those who cling to 'outgrown' 19th-century ideologies.
Far from crushing the individual, the Fascist State multiplies his energies, just as in a regiment a soldier is not diminished but multiplied by the number of his fellow soldiers.
The Doctrine of Fascism

- It claims a modern, universal thirst for authority, direction, and social order over previous liberal ideals.
- The author identifies Fascism as the defining doctrine of the current age, suggesting it is the natural successor to past systems.
- The vitality of the movement is argued through its ability to inspire faith and produce martyrs for its cause.
- Fascism is presented as a universal phenomenon representing a significant evolutionary moment in human thought.
Never before have the peoples thirsted for authority, direction, order, as they do now.
