Zarathustra Descends

After ten years of solitude in the mountains, Zarathustra feels his accumulated wisdom overflowing and decides he must return to humanity.
He compares himself to the sun, whose joy depends on having others to illuminate, and embraces the need to share his abundance.
Zarathustra’s descent marks a transformation from isolated sage into a human being bringing a gift to others, despite the risks of misunderstanding and rejection.
An old saint warns him that people distrust hermits and advises him to remain among animals rather than return to imperfect humanity.
The saint has withdrawn from mankind to love God, while Zarathustra insists that his mission is not charity but the offering of his hard-won treasures.

Behold. I am weary of my wisdom, like the bee that has gathered too much honey; I need hands outstretched to take it.

The Overman

Zarathustra encounters an old saint who remains unaware that God is dead, underscoring the gulf between traditional faith and Zarathustra’s new teaching.
In the marketplace, Zarathustra announces that humanity is a transitional stage and must strive to surpass itself rather than regress toward animality.
The overman represents the meaning of the earth, calling people to reject otherworldly hopes and remain loyal to embodied, earthly existence.
With God’s death, sin against the earth replaces sin against God; despising the body and exalting an unknowable beyond are presented as forms of decay.
Zarathustra identifies the “hour of the great contempt” as the moment when people become dissatisfied with their limited happiness, reason, virtue, justice, and pity, creating the possibility of transformation.

The overman is the meaning of the earth. Let your will say: The overman shall be the meaning of the earth!

Man as a Bridge

Zarathustra condemns timid pity and spiritual smallness, calling instead for the transformative intensity of lightning and frenzy.
Humanity is portrayed as a dangerous bridge between the animal and the overman, suspended above an abyss rather than destined as a final goal.
True greatness lies in self-overcoming: people must risk their comfort, identity, and even survival in order to make a higher form of life possible.
Zarathustra praises those who devote themselves completely to knowledge, work, virtue, creativity, and sacrifice without seeking reward or preservation.
The overman appears as a future possibility heralded by individuals who willingly perish like heavy drops from a dark cloud before the coming lightning.

Man is a rope stretched between animal and overman - a rope over an abyss.

The Last Man

Zarathustra urges humanity to set a great goal and preserve the inner chaos necessary to create something higher.
He warns that humanity may lose its capacity for longing, self-transcendence, and even self-contempt, giving rise to the diminished “last man.”
The last men prize comfort, safety, equality, and modest pleasures above ambition, love, creation, or risk.
Their society rejects hardship and difference: everyone thinks alike, avoids conflict, and treats unusual people as insane.
When the crowd asks to become last men rather than pursue the overman, Zarathustra realizes that they misunderstand him and respond to his warning with laughter and hatred.

I say to you: one must still have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star. I say to you: you still have chaos in yourself.

The Tightrope and Corpse

A tightrope walker is pursued by a mocking buffoon, who leaps over him and causes him to lose his balance and fall to his death.
Zarathustra remains beside the mortally injured performer, rejecting his belief in the devil and hell and assuring him that death need not be feared.
The dying man sees himself as little more than an animal trained through pain, but Zarathustra affirms that there is nothing contemptible in making danger one’s calling.
Reflecting on the event, Zarathustra declares human existence uncanny and without meaning, while presenting the overman as the meaning he hopes to teach humanity.
Zarathustra carries the corpse away, but the buffoon secretly follows and warns him to leave the town.

Uncanny is human existence and as yet without meaning: a buffoon can become a man's fate and fatality.

Toward Living Companions

A buffoon warns Zarathustra that the virtuous, religious, and ordinary people all despise him, urging him to leave the town before he is killed.
At the town gate, gravediggers mock Zarathustra for carrying a dead man, but he refuses to answer their cruelty.
Driven by hunger, Zarathustra finds shelter with a hermit, who feeds him and insists that even the dead companion should be included.
After protecting the corpse from wolves and sleeping in the forest, Zarathustra awakens with a new insight: he needs living companions rather than dead burdens.
He resolves to speak not to the general population but to companions who freely follow their own paths while accompanying him.

A light has dawned upon me: I need companions - living ones, not dead companions and corpses, which I carry with me wherever I wish. But I need living companions, who will follow me because they want to follow themselves - wherever I want.

Zarathustra Seeks Creators

Zarathustra rejects the role of shepherd or gravedigger, declaring that he will no longer serve established herds, believers, or the dead.
He seeks fellow creators who will break inherited tables of value and write new ones, even if society condemns them as destroyers or lawbreakers.
His mission turns toward harvesters and rejoicers—people prepared to transform what is ripe rather than preserve exhausted moral systems.
After burying and leaving his first companion, Zarathustra commits himself to revealing the path toward the overman and singing to those capable of hearing something new.
An eagle with a serpent coiled around its neck becomes a symbol of his animal companions: pride and wisdom joined together as he begins his dangerous descent among human beings.
The passage closes the prologue and introduces the First Part, beginning with the theme of “The Three Metamorphoses.”

“I am not to be a shepherd, I am not to be a gravedigger. No more will I speak to the people; for the last time have I spoken to the dead.”

The Spirit’s Three Metamorphoses

The spirit first becomes a camel, willingly bearing the heaviest burdens: humility, suffering, truth, isolation, and love toward those who despise it.
In the wilderness, the camel transforms into a lion that seeks freedom and confronts the great dragon of inherited commands, whose law is “You shall.”
The lion’s achievement is not yet the creation of new values, but the liberation necessary to create them—a defiant “I will” and a sacred No to imposed duty.
The lion finally becomes a child, embodying innocence, forgetting, play, self-renewal, and the sacred Yes that allows the spirit to will its own world.
The three stages describe a movement from submission, through rebellion, toward creative affirmation and a self-fashioned way of living.

Innocence is the child, and forgeting, a new beginning, a game, a self-propelling wheel, a first movement, a sacred Yes.

The Wisdom of Sleep

Good sleep requires disciplined days: repeated self-overcoming, reconciliation, truth-seeking, and laughter create a healthy weariness.
Sleep depends on moral and social peace, including honesty, harmony with neighbors, acceptance of authority, and a modest measure of reputation and wealth.
Virtues must themselves be put to rest at the proper time, lest they quarrel internally and disturb the sleeper.
Rather than summon sleep, the wise person reviews the day’s deeds and thoughts until sleep arrives naturally as an unbidden thief.
Zarathustra finds the teacher’s advice comically foolish yet profoundly practical, concluding that people have long sought virtue mainly as a way to secure good sleep.

Truly, on soft soles does it come to me, the dearest of thieves, and steals from me my thoughts: stupid do I then stand, like this academic chair.

From Afterworld to Earth

Zarathustra condemns scholars who equate wisdom with dreamless sleep, suggesting their lifeless virtue is already fading.
He recalls once imagining the world as the creation of a suffering, dissatisfied God and as a drunken escape from pain.
He now recognizes that gods and afterworlds are human inventions born from suffering, impotence, exhaustion, and the body’s despair of earthly existence.
The supposed “other world” is not a revealed realm but a dehumanized nothingness created by the wish to flee the body and the earth.
Zarathustra instead trusts the honest, contradictory self, which speaks through the body and teaches pride in earthly existence and the power to create meaning here.

Suffering it was, and impotence - that created all afterworlds; and the brief madness of bliss, which is experienced only by those who suffer most deeply.

The Wisdom of the Body

Zarathustra argues that the sick and dying reject the body and earth, inventing heavenly worlds and redemption as escapes from their suffering.
Even religious visions of transcendence, he claims, draw their emotional force from the body and the earth they despise.
He treats the sickly with compassion, hoping they may recover, overcome their weaknesses, and create stronger bodies rather than cling to consoling delusions.
The passage contrasts backward-looking faith and hostility to doubt with the honesty of discernment and intellectual questioning.
The body is presented as a greater intelligence than conscious thought: the self, or subconscious ruler, guides and organizes the senses, spirit, and the proud little “I.”

“Listen rather, my brothers, to the voice of the healthy body; it is a more honest and pure voice.”

The Body and Virtue

Zarathustra presents the subconscious, creative self as the body’s deeper intelligence, directing the ego through pain, desire, pleasure, and thought.
Those who despise the body are portrayed as people whose creative power has failed; their contempt for life and earth conceals envy and a wish to perish.
A true virtue should be intensely personal and difficult to name, rather than a conventional morality shared with the herd or imposed by divine and human laws.
Passions are not simply evil impulses: when given a higher aim, they can be transformed into virtues, joys, and even benevolent powers.
Zarathustra favors earthly, individual values rooted in lived experience over abstract prudence, universal wisdom, or promises of otherworldly paradise.

Once you had wild dogs in your cellar: but they changed at last into birds and charming singers.

Virtue and the Pale Criminal

After enduring sorrow, a person may be free of ordinary evil, but still suffer from conflict among their own virtues.
Possessing many virtues creates an inner battlefield: each virtue demands supremacy and the person’s entire spirit, making jealousy even among virtues potentially self-destructive.
Zarathustra urges people to love their virtues while recognizing that humanity itself must ultimately be overcome.
Judges should respond to the pale criminal with pity rather than revenge, distinguishing an enemy, invalid, or fool from a villain, wretch, or sinner.
The criminal’s motives are more complicated than the deed suggests: thought, action, and the idea of the action differ, while weak reason may disguise a thirst for blood as robbery or revenge.

But one thing is the thought, another thing is the deed, and another thing is the idea of the deed. The wheel of causality does not roll between them.

Blood, Madness, and Spirit

The “pale criminal” is portrayed as a diseased, divided being whose physical suffering is misread by the soul as murderous desire, causing him to inflict on others the pain he cannot bear himself.
Zarathustra rejects simple moral judgment, arguing that what counts as good or evil changes across ages and that supposedly virtuous people may merely preserve themselves through complacency.
True writing must be intensely lived: words written “with blood” carry spirit, while passive readers and universal literacy risk weakening both writing and thought.
Aphorisms should be like mountain peaks—brief, difficult, and demanding enough to require a strong, elevated reader rather than an idle consumer.
Wisdom calls for courage, scorn, humor, and resilience; although life is difficult, it should be loved passionately, with the productive madness and method that accompany love.

Of all that is written, I love only what a person has written with his blood. Write with blood, and you will find that blood is spirit.

Lightness and Ascent

Zarathustra celebrates laughter, dancing, flight, and lightness as forces that overcome the oppressive “spirit of gravity.”
He argues that those who rise toward height and illumination are also pulled more fiercely toward their hidden, darker roots.
A troubled youth confesses that his ambition has isolated him, made him distrust himself, and intensified both his contempt and longing.
The youth’s envy of Zarathustra becomes a source of despair and self-destruction, revealing the psychological cost of striving above others.
Rather than condemn him, Zarathustra recognizes the youth’s pain, embraces him, and leads him away.

Not by wrath, but by laughter, do we slay. Come, let us slay the spirit of gravity!

Freedom and Death

Zarathustra warns that those seeking freedom may still carry the habits, impulses, and corruption of their former imprisonment.
The liberated spirit must purify itself, preserve its love and hope, and resist becoming arrogant, mocking, or destructive.
Noble individuals threaten both traditional “goodness” and social conformity because they seek to create new values rather than preserve the old.
Zarathustra mourns those who abandon their highest hopes and retreat into temporary pleasures, sensuality, or contempt for heroism.
He then condemns preachers of death who portray life as suffering, renunciation, or excess, urging people toward withdrawal, celibacy, or self-destruction.

But by my love and hope I appeal to you: cast not away the hero in your soul! Maintain holy your highest hope!

Warriors Against Death

Zarathustra condemns those who preach death through pity, self-sacrifice, or promises of eternal life, arguing that their apparent compassion ultimately deepens people’s attachment to despair.
Those who throw themselves into exhausting labor and constant novelty may be using activity to flee from themselves; genuine faith in life would require patience, stillness, and the ability to wait.
Zarathustra calls for warriors rather than merely uniformed soldiers: people who confront hatred and envy honestly and pursue knowledge with courage.
War should be understood as a struggle for one’s thoughts and values, while peace is valuable chiefly as a victorious pause before renewed challenges.
True greatness requires worthy enemies rather than despised ones, and the warrior’s virtue lies in courage, disciplined obedience, and transforming even ugliness or wickedness into sublimity.

You shall love peace as a means to new wars - and the short peace more than the long.

The New Idol

Zarathustra urges his followers to love life through their highest hope and to embrace the thought that humanity must be surpassed.
He presents life as a struggle requiring obedience, courage, and willingness to risk everything rather than seeking mere longevity or safety.
The state is condemned as a cold monster that falsely claims, “I am the people,” while creators—not governments—actually give peoples their values, faith, and love.
The state corrupts moral language, steals cultural achievements, and disguises domination, conformity, and collective decline as civilization and life.
It seduces the ambitious, virtuous, and weary by offering power and recognition, drawing the “superfluous” masses into a competition that ends in degradation and emptiness.

State is the name of the coldest of all cold monsters. Coldly lies it also; and this lie creeps from its mouth: "I, the state, am the people."

Escape the Marketplace

Zarathustra condemns the state as a cold, foul-smelling idol that breeds conformity, excess, and spiritual suffocation.
He urges great souls to seek solitude, simplicity, and freedom, where life becomes necessary rather than superfluous.
Beyond the state and marketplace lies the possibility of the overman: an independent person who creates rather than merely obeys or consumes.
The marketplace celebrates performers and public “great men,” while failing to recognize the invisible inventors of new values.
Public actors rely on noise, emotional shock, and shifting convictions, demanding simplistic Yes-or-No judgments instead of allowing truth to deepen slowly.
Those wounded by the marketplace should withdraw rather than fight its countless petty critics, whose resentment operates like poisonous flies.

Where solitude ends, there begins the market-place; and where the market-place begins, there begins also the noise of the great actors, and the buzzing of the poison-flies.

Poisonous Flies and Lust

Zarathustra warns that sensitive, exceptional people are gradually worn down by petty individuals whose seemingly innocent praise and closeness conceal envy, resentment, and a hunger to exploit them.
Small-minded people punish greatness and virtue while forgiving errors, because another person’s dignity exposes their own baseness and makes them feel diminished.
Gentleness does not protect the great from secret malice; even beneficence and humility may provoke hostility when others interpret them as contempt.
Zarathustra therefore advises withdrawal into solitude and invigorating surroundings rather than wasting one’s strength trying to drive away poisonous, mediocre people.
In his reflections on chastity, he distinguishes genuine innocence of instinct from repression, arguing that denied desire may return in distorted forms—as spiritualized lust, voyeurism, or counterfeit fellow-feeling.

Your neighbor will always be poisonous flies; what is great in you - that itself must make them more poisonous, and always more fly-like. Flee, my friend, into your solitude - and there, where a rough strong breeze blows.

The Demands of Friendship

The hermit longs for friendship because solitude allows the self to become trapped in an exhausting dialogue between “I” and “me.”
A true friend is not merely comforting company but a challenging third presence who prevents self-reflection from sinking into destructive depths.
Friendship requires reverence, honesty, and the willingness to oppose one another; a friend should also be one’s “best enemy.”
The ideal friend inspires self-surpassing, serving as an arrow aimed toward the overman rather than a mirror that confirms one’s weaknesses.
Pity must be discerning and restrained, since a friend may need strength, freedom, or an “unmoved eye” more than sympathy; neither slaves nor tyrants can form genuine friendship.
The passage ends with a sharply gendered claim that women know love but are not yet capable of friendship, reflecting the text’s provocative and controversial view of gender.

In one's friend one shall have one's best enemy. you shall be closest to him with your heart when you withstand him.

Values Create Meaning

Zarathustra distinguishes mere comradeship from genuine friendship, criticizing people for their poverty and sordidness of soul.
Different peoples define good and bad according to their own needs, environments, struggles, and ambitions; no culture shares an entirely universal value system.
A people’s moral ideals reveal its will to power: what it praises is whatever helps it endure, rule, conquer, excel, or overcome hardship.
Human beings do not discover values as heavenly truths; they create them, assigning meaning to things in order to preserve and shape their existence.
Changing values requires new creators, yet societies have historically created shared moral tables before individuals emerged as independent valuers; virtues arise from both love and wrath.

Valuing is creating: hear it, you creating ones! Valuation itself is the treasure and jewel of the valued things.

Beyond Neighbor-Love

Humanity has created countless values for different peoples, but still lacks a single overarching goal—and may therefore remain unfinished as humanity.
Zarathustra argues that conventional neighbor-love often disguises self-loathing, dependence, and an inability to endure solitude.
He urges people to turn away from the merely near and toward “furthest love”: devotion to future possibilities, ideals, and the overman.
True friendship should be creative and generous, offering a complete world while transforming chance into purpose and evil into growth.
The path of creation requires isolation and self-discovery, even though the voice and pain of the herd continue to echo within the individual.

Higher than love to your neighbor is love to the furthest and future ones; higher still than love to men, is love to things and phantoms.

The Solitary Path

True freedom requires more than escaping external restraints; it demands the strength to make one’s own values and submit to one’s own law.
Self-directed life brings terrifying solitude, self-doubt, and the risk that pride and courage will eventually collapse.
The solitary individual must endure envy, contempt, injustice, and hostility from the “good and just” without abandoning the path.
The greatest enemy is the self: transformation requires confronting one’s inner demons and burning away the old self.
Solitude ultimately becomes a creative and loving act, through which one remakes oneself and creates new ideals.

Ready must you be to burn yourself in your own flame; how could you become new if you have not first become ashes!

Zarathustra on Woman

Zarathustra urges his brother to embrace isolation, love, and creative work, even at the risk of destroying himself in pursuit of something beyond himself.
He describes truth as a mischievous, dangerous child that must be carefully restrained because it may provoke more loudly than people can tolerate.
In his conversation with an old woman, Zarathustra presents highly traditional and provocative views of gender, defining woman primarily through motherhood and her relationship to man and child.
He portrays men as seeking danger and play, while women are assigned the roles of recreation, obedience, sacrifice, and inspiring the hope of creating the overman.
The old woman responds with a final “little truth” of her own, ending the exchange with the famous warning that a man going to women should not forget his whip.

“you go to women? Do not forget your whip!”

Justice, Revenge, and Marriage

Zarathustra responds to a deadly serpent with defiant gratitude, transforming an apparent attack into an awakening that continues his journey.
He rejects conventional morality, arguing that enemies should be shown the good they have done rather than simply repaid with evil, while still allowing anger and limited revenge.
Justice, in his view, should be compassionate and self-sacrificing: people may share or even accept injustice, and acknowledging one’s own wrong can be nobler than proving oneself right.
Zarathustra distrusts cold, punitive justice and calls instead for a love that can see clearly, bear guilt, and acquit everyone except the judge.
He warns against harming hermits, whose inner depths are unknowable, then turns to marriage as a creative undertaking requiring self-mastery and the will to produce something greater than either partner alone.
Marriage should not merely perpetuate life horizontally, but build ‘upward’—a higher body, soul, and shared creation grounded in mutual reverence.

Shared injustice is half justice. And he who can bear it, shall take the injustice upon himself!

Marriage and Right Death

Zarathustra condemns marriages born from spiritual poverty, self-complacency, and mismatched partners, arguing that social approval cannot make an unsuitable union holy.
He portrays marriage as the transformation of many brief follies into “one long stupidity,” warning that people often compromise their ideals when choosing a spouse.
True love should generate sympathy, creative striving, and a longing to surpass oneself; only a marriage serving a higher purpose deserves to be called sacred.
Zarathustra introduces the idea of voluntary death, insisting that one should die at the right time rather than cling passively to life or arrive at death too early or too late.
The finest death is “consummating”: a purposeful death that triumphantly inspires and consecrates the hopes of those who remain; merely senescent or thief-like death is rejected.

Many die too late, and some die too early. Yet strange sounds the precept: "Die at the right time!"

Dying and Bestowing

Zarathustra praises the difficult art of leaving at the right time, arguing that one should depart before love and admiration turn sour.
Those who cling cowardly to life may decay like overripe fruit; against slow resignation, he calls for a more decisive and purposeful approach to death.
A mature death should affirm rather than condemn the earth, allowing one’s spirit and virtue to shine as a final “evening after-glow.”
Zarathustra presents his own death as a gift that will make his friends love the earth more deeply, leaving them the task of carrying his goal forward.
As he parts from his disciples, the golden staff they give him introduces gold as an image of the highest virtue: radiant, rare, unprofiting, and freely bestowing.

Would that there came preachers of speedy death! Those would be the appropriate storms and agitators of the trees of life!

Virtue Returns to Earth

True virtue is generous and overflowing: it gathers inner riches so they can be transformed into gifts for others.
Zarathustra distinguishes healthy, creative selfishness from the sickly selfishness of thieves, which hoards, envies, and reveals bodily and spiritual degeneration.
Virtue arises when the body and spirit are elevated into creative power—beyond praise and blame, comfort, and fragmented desires.
The body is portrayed as the active historical force, while the spirit serves as its herald, companion, and echo; moral concepts are only suggestive symbols of this deeper process.
Zarathustra urges his disciples to remain faithful to the earth and bring runaway spiritual virtue back to body and life, giving the earth a distinctly human meaning.

When your heart overflows broad and full like the river, a blessing and a danger to the lowlanders: there is the origin of your virtue.

Lose Me, Find Yourselves

Humanity embodies both the rationality and madness of its inheritance, and must struggle against chance, nonsense, and inherited error.
Zarathustra calls his followers to serve the “sense of the earth,” revalue existence, and become fighters and creators rather than passive believers.
Self-healing and self-overcoming are presented as paths toward discovering the many untrodden possibilities of human life.
The isolated and self-chosen are promised a future community that may give rise to a new people—and ultimately to the overman.
Zarathustra rejects disciples who merely worship him, urging them to leave, deny him, and discover themselves; the section culminates in the hope that the overman will replace the dead gods.

Now do I bid you lose me and find yourselves; and only when you have all denied me, will I return to you.

The Return to Friends

After years of solitude, Zarathustra’s growing wisdom becomes painful because he has too much to give and must restrain his generosity.
A disturbing dream reveals that his doctrine has been distorted by enemies, who make false teachings appear genuine and cause his followers to feel ashamed.
Recognizing that his friends are lost, Zarathustra resolves to leave his cave and seek both friends and enemies again.
His renewed happiness erupts as impatient love, powerful speech, and a new language that must flow freely rather than follow worn-out forms.
Even his enemies contribute to his joy by giving him something to confront; yet his wild wisdom may frighten both enemies and friends.

Wounded am I by my happiness: all sufferers shall be physicians to me! To my friends can I again go down, and also to my enemies!

Creating Beyond God

Zarathustra urges his friends to absorb his teachings as naturally and joyfully as ripe figs, presenting them as the fruit of abundance.
He rejects God as an unnecessary and destabilizing conjecture, arguing that human beings should limit themselves to what they can conceive, perceive, and create.
Rather than worshipping a transcendent deity, people should transform themselves into ancestors of the overman through their own creative will.
The world is portrayed as something shaped by human reason, likeness, love, and will, making creation a source of meaning and happiness.
Creation requires suffering, transformation, repeated farewells, and the painful labor of rebirth; nevertheless, willing becomes the force that liberates and consoles the creator.

Creating - that is the great salvation from suffering, and life's alleviation. But for the creator to appear, suffering itself is needed, and much transformation.

Will, Pity, and Shame

Zarathustra presents willing as the source of emancipation, valuation, knowledge, and creative power; to stop willing would be a debilitating surrender.
His hammer symbolizes the ruthless destruction of convention and the release of the overman’s image hidden within humanity’s hardest forms.
Zarathustra criticizes pity when it humiliates the sufferer, arguing that even assistance can wound pride and create resentment or revenge.
He claims humanity’s “original sin” is enjoying itself too little, suggesting that genuine joy may reduce the impulse to hurt and manipulate others.
Petty thoughts are portrayed as more insidious than overt evil: evil deeds openly reveal their sickness, while small-mindedness quietly spreads like infection.

Since humanity came into being, man has enjoyed himself too little: that alone, my brothers, is our original sin!

Pity, Love, and Priests

Zarathustra warns that pity can become destructive, producing folly and suffering rather than genuine help.
True friendship offers support without sentimentality, while great love surpasses forgiveness and pity by seeking to create and elevate what it loves.
He urges people possessed by inner demons to cultivate and master them, since even a troubling force may become a path to greatness.
Zarathustra views priests as both enemies and fellow sufferers: their meekness conceals resentment, while their beliefs imprison them in false values and empty words.
Religious institutions are portrayed as stale, confining caves that suppress spiritual freedom; only when their ruins open again to the clear sky can they become worthy of renewed affection.

False values and fatuous words: these are the worst monsters for mortals - long slumbers and waits the fate that is in them.

Against Saviors and Rewards

Zarathustra condemns religions that glorify suffering, death, and martyrdom, arguing that their saviors arise from spiritual defects rather than freedom or knowledge.

But blood is the very worst witness to truth; blood taints the purest teaching, and turns it into delusion and hatred of heart.

The Self in Virtue

Virtue should arise from one’s deepest self, not from external rewards, punishment, recognition, or social approval.
Like a star’s light that continues traveling after the star has gone out, the effects of genuine virtue endure beyond the completed action and even beyond memory.
Zarathustra mocks false forms of virtue: submission, laziness, revenge, moral superiority, conformity, empty piety, and the enforcement of social order.
People often redefine their weaknesses, resentments, fears, or desire for control as “good” and “evil,” claiming authority while remaining trapped in inherited formulas.
True virtue requires abandoning the language of reward and retribution and placing one’s whole self into one’s actions, as a mother is present in her child.

Ah! my friends! That your very Self be in your action, as the mother is in the child: let that be your formula of virtue!

Escaping the Rabble

Zarathustra portrays life as a well of delight that becomes poisoned when the “rabble” consume it with vulgarity, lust, and corrupted desires.

Because, for man to be redeemed from revenge - that is for me the bridge to the highest hope, and a rainbow after long storms.

Struggle, Inequality, and Truth

Thus, steadfast and beautiful, let us also be enemies, my friends! Divinely will we strive against one another!

The Wilderness of Spirit

The so-called famous wise ones serve the people like donkeys harnessed to carts, even when they appear dignified or wear the “golden harness” of public honor.
True conscientiousness requires abandoning veneration and entering a lonely, God-forsaken wilderness rather than settling comfortably among society’s idols.
The free spirit embraces hunger, solitude, fearlessness, and independence from popular happiness, religious authority, and adoration.
Spirit grows through suffering, self-overcoming, and confrontation with its own inner cruelty—not merely through the sparks of insight that respectable thinkers display.
Those who lack the courage and depth of the eagle or the wilderness remain lukewarm, mistaking familiarity, charity, and conventional wisdom for genuine spiritual greatness.

Spirit is life which itself cuts into life: by its own torture does it increase its own knowledge, - did you know that before?

The Loneliness of Light

Zarathustra portrays his wisdom as a wind-filled sail crossing the sea, suggesting that the famous “wise ones” lack the force or will to accompany him.
In the Night-Song, darkness awakens the soul’s deepest love, longing, and need for expression; Zarathustra’s inner abundance becomes a gushing fountain.
Although he gives constantly, Zarathustra cannot experience the happiness of receiving, and his generosity leaves him isolated, hardened, and spiritually exhausted.
The distance between giver and receiver creates resentment: he even imagines injuring or robbing those he has illuminated, revealing the destructive tension within unchecked abundance.
The song closes by embracing night as the source of speech and longing, then shifts toward a new scene in which Zarathustra encounters dancing maidens in the forest.

Oh, the misery of all bestowers! Oh, the darkening of my sun! Oh, the craving to crave! Oh, the violent hunger in satiety!

Life, Wisdom, and Gravity

Graves of Youth

The speaker sails toward a grave-island, carrying an evergreen wreath for the lost visions and loves of his youth.
Though these beloved memories are dead, they remain a source of sweetness and richness, binding the lonely seafarer to his past.
He blames his enemies for destroying these hopes through malice, striking at his most vulnerable point and taking away something irretrievable.
The enemies have corrupted the speaker’s former purity, joyful wisdom, tender longings, close relationships, and confidence in the path he once followed.

Moral ideas of good and evil are portrayed as human valuations carried along by the river of becoming, rather than eternal truths governing it.
Life itself teaches a hierarchy of obedience and command: everything living obeys, but what cannot command itself must be commanded, and commanding is the harder burden.

Yes, something invulnerable, unburiable is with me, something that would rend rocks asunder: it is called my Will.

Life as Self-Overcoming

Life is portrayed as fundamentally driven by a Will to Power, present even in obedience, service, sacrifice, and love.
Every act of commanding carries risk and demands self-judgment: the living being becomes its own lawgiver, judge, avenger, and victim.

Wherever I found a living thing, there found I Will to Power; and even in the will of the servant found I the will to be master.

From Sublimity to Beauty

The “sublime one” has confronted knowledge, monsters, and painful truths, but remains grim, self-absorbed, and unable to laugh or appreciate beauty.
His transformation requires turning away from self-contempt and emerging from the shade into an earthly, embodied happiness rather than living on lofty expectations.
Heroic will and intellectual mastery are not enough: he must redeem his monsters and enigmas by transforming them into creative, life-affirming forms.
Beauty is hardest for powerful souls because it demands relaxed muscles, an unharnessed will, and the ability to let power become graceful rather than strained.
The sublime person’s final self-conquest is goodness; once strength becomes gracious, he can recognize and even adore his own beauty.

When power becomes gracious and descends into the visible - I call such condescension, beauty.

The Patchwork of Culture

Zarathustra returns from a terrifying vision of the future to examine contemporary people and finds their culture grotesquely multicolored and fragmented.
Modern individuals wear the accumulated masks of past eras, beliefs, customs, and identities, making them impossible to recognize or decipher beneath the layers.
Their proud claim to be wholly realistic and free of superstition conceals a deeper spiritual confusion: they are living contradictions composed of everything that has ever been believed.
Zarathustra sees their lack of faith as a symptom of creative sterility; those who cannot create also lose the dreams and convictions that make creation possible.
He mocks their emaciated spiritual condition and nihilistic sense that everything deserves to perish, while admitting that their emptiness fills him with disgust and alienation.

Half-open doors are you, at which grave-diggers wait. And this is your reality: "Everything deserves to perish."

Desire Against Detachment

Zarathustra feels at home nowhere in the present, turning instead toward the undiscovered land of his children and the future he hopes to create.
He mocks the moon as a deceptive, jealous observer, using it to symbolize people who gaze at earthly life while secretly longing for it.

Loving and perishing: these have rhymed from eternity. Will to love: that is to be ready also for death.

Against Scholars

Zarathustra exposes the supposed purity of contemplative people as a mask concealing deceit, self-deception, and a coiled inner corruption.
He urges people to believe in themselves and their inner nature, suggesting that lack of self-belief is the root of lying.
The sunrise symbolizes innocent, creative love: the sun thirsts for the sea, while Zarathustra’s ideal of knowledge is that everything deep should rise to his height.
Zarathustra declares that he has left the scholars’ house, preferring freedom, fresh air, and intense personal thought to academic honors and dusty rooms.
He mocks scholars as detached spectators who merely stare at the thoughts of others, mechanically grind ideas into lifeless fragments, and hide the living source of knowledge beneath cleverness.

Like those who stand in the street and gape at the passers-by: thus do they also wait, and gape at the thoughts which others have thought.

Poets and Their Illusions

Zarathustra portrays ordinary people as suspicious, petty, and determined to muffle anyone who rises intellectually or spiritually above them.
He argues that social equality is not the same as justice: individuals differ in what they can will, understand, and become.
Zarathustra admits that poets—including himself—lie because they know too little, remember imperfectly, and transform experience into seductive images.
Poets romanticize nature, popular wisdom, and the “eternally feminine,” mistaking emotion and fantasy for privileged access to truth.
They populate the heavens with poetic symbols, turning gods and Supermen into colorful inventions suspended in the realm of clouds.

And that she steals to their ear to whisper secrets into it, and amorous flatteries: of this do they plume and pride themselves, before all mortals!

Zarathustra Wearies of Poets

Zarathustra condemns both old and new poets as superficial, claiming their thoughts and feelings never reach genuine depth.
He accuses poets of confusing muddied language and emotional mixture with profundity, while using beauty and spectacle to conceal spiritual impurity.
Through images of the sea, pearls, molluscs, and the peacock, he portrays poets as vain performers who seek admiration from any audience.
Zarathustra foresees poets becoming weary of their own self-regard and transforming into penitents of the spirit.
The narrative then shifts to a smoking volcanic island, where sailors witness Zarathustra flying toward the volcano and conclude that he is going to hell.

Ah, how I am weary of all the inadequate that is insisted on as actual! Ah, how I am weary of the poets!

Noise, Power, and Renewal

Zarathustra’s disciples fear he has been taken by the devil, but rejoice when he returns after five days.
Zarathustra exposes the fire-dog as a shallow, embittered source of noise, smoke, and false revolutionary rhetoric.
He argues that genuine historical transformation comes through the quiet creation of new values, not through spectacular upheaval or loud declarations of freedom.
The destruction of statues and institutions may paradoxically help them return in more beautiful and vital forms, since contempt can become the soil of renewal.
Zarathustra identifies the state and the church as deceptive powers that use noise and spectacle to appear more important and authoritative than they are.

The greatest events - are not our noisiest, but our stillest hours.

The Soothsayer’s Despair

Zarathustra rebukes the angry fire-dog by contrasting destructive rage with a more creative fire whose breath is gold and laughter, drawn from the earth’s golden heart.
After the fire-dog retreats in shame, Zarathustra’s disciples barely attend to the story, being more excited to report strange sightings of sailors, rabbits, and a flying man.
A soothsayer foretells a bleak age in which humanity’s finest become exhausted, all values seem empty, and labor, nature, faith, and even death lose their meaning.
The prophecy deeply affects Zarathustra: he fears that his light will be extinguished by the approaching long twilight and falls into three days of grief, fasting, silence, and restless sleep.
Upon awakening, Zarathustra recounts a disturbing dream in which he has renounced life and become a night-watchman guarding the coffins of defeated existence in a mountain fortress of Death.

“All our fountains have dried up, even the sea has receded. All the ground tries to gape, but the depth will not swallow!”

The Coffin of Laughter

Zarathustra dreams of inhabiting a deathly fortress filled with midnight brightness, loneliness, silence, rusted keys, and creaking gates.
After three thunderous knocks, a roaring wind forces open the gate and throws in a black coffin that bursts into a thousand peals of laughter.
The coffin releases grotesque, child-sized figures—children, angels, owls, fools, and butterflies—that mock and terrify Zarathustra until his own cry awakens him.
Zarathustra’s beloved disciple interprets the dream as a vision of Zarathustra himself: a life-affirming force whose laughter breaks into the realm of death and defeats its guardians.
The disciples argue that Zarathustra’s enemies are the true subject of the nightmare, and that they too may awaken from their hostility and come over to him.

Then did a roaring wind tear the folds apart: whistling, whizzing, and piercing, it threw to me a black coffin. And in the roaring and whistling and whizzing, the coffin burst open, and spouted out a thousand peals of laughter.

Fragments of Humanity

A hunchback challenges Zarathustra to perform miracles on the disabled, believing that physical healing would win the people’s faith in his teaching.
Zarathustra rejects the idea that deformity can simply be corrected: removing a person’s hump might also remove his spirit, while restoring sight could expose him to unbearable realities.
He argues that society contains “reversed cripples”—people who possess an excess of one faculty while lacking almost everything else, becoming distorted rather than whole.
The image of a gigantic ear attached to a tiny, impoverished man satirizes the public’s worship of so-called geniuses whose greatness may conceal deep inner deficiency.
Zarathustra sees humanity as broken into fragments, yet endures this vision by becoming a prophet and bridge toward a future in which a more complete humanity might emerge.

Truly, my friends, I walk among men as among the fragments and limbs of human beings! This is the terrible thing to my eye, that I find man broken up, and scattered about, as on a battle - and butcher-ground.

The Will Against Time

This, yes, this alone is revenge itself: the Will's antipathy to time, and its "It was."

The Wisdom of Declivity

Zarathustra asks how the Will to Power can overcome revenge, reconcile itself with time, and learn to “will backwards,” suggesting a transformation beyond ordinary reconciliation.
Overcome by alarm, Zarathustra abruptly stops and jokes about the difficulty of living among people—especially for someone who talks too much—while the hunchback questions his different ways of speaking.
Zarathustra calls the downward slope more dangerous than the summit: he is torn between reaching toward the overman and clinging to humanity for stability and connection.
His “manly prudence” is to remain open to deception, tolerate human weakness, and accept even “dirty water” in order not to lose faith in people or become isolated from them.
He is more forgiving of vanity than wounded pride, seeing vain people as performers whose desire for admiration turns life into a drama and helps relieve his melancholy.

Not the height, it is the declivity that is terrible! The declivity, where the gaze shoots downwards, and the hand grasps upwards.

The Stillest Hour

Zarathustra argues that true virtue may be unconscious, while even vanity can unknowingly possess modesty.
He refuses to be frightened by conventional wickedness, seeing evil as fertile, evolving, and not yet fully realized.
He imagines a future of greater “dragons” and a stronger overman, requiring humanity’s wildness to grow into worthy opposition.
Zarathustra mocks the good, just, wise, and powerful for fearing the overman’s goodness and mistaking it for devilry.
Despite his attachment to his companions, Zarathustra is compelled to return to solitude by his ominous “stillest hour,” when an unseen voice demands that he acknowledge what he already knows.

Do you know the terror of him who falls asleep?- To the very toes he is terrified, because the ground gives way under him, and the dream begins.

The Unripe Teacher

Zarathustra trembles before an inward voice that demands he speak his own word, even if doing so means surrendering himself.
The voice insists that he must stop dwelling on his limitations and accept the power to command great things, despite his lack of a lion’s voice.
It teaches that the quietest words can unleash storms, and that seemingly gentle thoughts may guide the world more effectively than forceful declarations.
Zarathustra’s shame and pride prevent him from becoming childlike and free of self-consciousness; he finally refuses the transformation demanded of him.
Because his fruits are ripe while he is not yet mature enough to offer them, he must return to solitude, leaving his friends in anguish and tears.

It is the stillest words which bring the storm. Thoughts that come with doves' footsteps guide the world.

The Last Summit

Zarathustra sees himself as a lifelong wanderer and mountain-climber, unable to remain still or satisfied with ordinary, level existence.
His coming journey represents a return to his own scattered self: fate and experience no longer appear as external accidents but as parts of his identity.
He stands before his hardest and most solitary ascent, where greatness requires accepting that no path remains behind him and no one can follow.
True elevation demands severe self-overcoming: he must rise beyond his own heart, abandon self-indulgence, and develop the hardness needed to see beyond appearances.
The passage ends with a paradoxical descent: before reaching his highest summit, Zarathustra must go deeper than ever before, embracing loneliness and the dark sea of fate.

Your foot itself has effaced the path behind you, and over it stands written: Impossibility. And if all ladders henceforth fail you, then must you learn to mount upon your own head: how could you mount upward otherwise?

The Sea and the Enigma

Zarathustra embraces the descent into suffering, recognizing that the highest achievements arise from the deepest depths.
Near the sea, he imagines it as a sleeping, troubled monster burdened by evil memories or expectations.

Out of the deepest must the highest come to its height.

Courage at the Gateway

A mocking dwarf burdens Zarathustra with the image of a stone thrown upward that must inevitably fall, turning ambition into self-condemnation.
Zarathustra summons courage to confront the dwarf, presenting courage as the force that overcomes despair, vertigo, suffering, and even death.
He declares that human courage triumphs by attacking pain directly, while fellow-suffering becomes the deepest abyss because it forces one to look fully into life’s misery.
At a gateway called “This Moment,” Zarathustra describes two opposing roads—one backward and one forward—stretching into eternity.

Courage slays also death itself; for it says: "Was that life? Well! Once more!"

The Serpent and Laughter

Zarathustra’s reflections on eternal recurrence become so frightening that he grows afraid of his own thoughts and memories.
A dog’s ghostly howl recalls a childhood scene of moonlit terror, linking his present vision to an old sense of pity and dread.

No longer shepherd, no longer man - a transfigured being, a light-surrounded being, that laughed! Never on earth laughed a man as he laughed!

Children of Creation

Zarathustra reflects on sacrificing happiness to cultivate his thoughts and nurture the highest hopes he has created.
He realizes that true companions and children of hope cannot simply be found; they must first be brought into being through his own creative work.
His young creations must eventually be separated, tested by solitude, hardship, and danger, so they can become independent fellow-creators rather than dependents.
Love threatens to become possession: by clinging to his children, Zarathustra risks losing himself and becoming trapped by his own desire.
He is summoned toward departure and a final self-overcoming, but must first find the strength to confront the terrifying, buried thought that has long haunted him.

But I lay enchained to my love for my children: desire spread this snare for me - the desire for love - that I should become the prey of my children, and lose myself in them.

Distrustful Happiness

Zarathustra distrusts the apparent promise of happiness, suspecting its beauty may conceal danger or arrive at the wrong moment.
He tries to push away a blissful hour, believing himself prepared instead for his destined suffering, yet happiness pursues him through the night.
His concluding joke presents happiness as a woman who becomes elusive precisely because he refuses to chase her.
At dawn, Zarathustra addresses the pure heavens as an intimate, silent friend and spiritual counterpart with whom he shares solitude, grief, and the desire to rise beyond the self.
He rejects “passing clouds” as symbols of compromise, contamination, and mediation, longing instead for an absolute, unclouded affirmation of life.

Rather will I sit in a tub under a closed heaven, rather will I sit in the abyss without heaven, than see you, you luminous heaven, tainted with passing clouds!

Blessing Chance

He presents himself as a blesser and Yes-sayer who strives to stand above things like a vast, protective heaven.

Wisdom exists only as a small leaven within things; the deeper truth is that life dances freely upon the feet of chance.
When Zarathustra returns among humanity, he observes its new houses and manners with sorrow, concluding that everything has become smaller.

That you are to me a dancing-floor for divine chances, that you are to me a table of the Gods, for divine dice and dice-players!

The Dwarfing Virtue

Zarathustra feels suffocated by a society of smallness, where even those like him must stoop to pass through its narrow spaces.

Everywhere do I see lower doorways: he who is of my type can still go through them, but - he must stoop!

Against Small Virtues

Their moderation and submission domesticate human beings, turning the wolf into a dog and reducing life to safe mediocrity.

This however is my teaching: he who wishes one day to fly, must first learn standing and walking and running and climbing and dancing: - one does not fly into flying!

Zarathustra’s Final Gift

Like the sun will also Zarathustra go down: now sits he here and waits, old broken tables around him, and also new tables - half-written.

True honor lies in one’s direction, will, and effort to surpass oneself—as a procreator, cultivator, and sower of the future.
People should love their children’s undiscovered future rather than remain loyal to fatherlands and forefather-lands; in this way, they can redeem the past inherited from their ancestors.
Nietzsche attacks joyless pessimism that calls life vain, urging instead a vigorous affirmation of living, including the supposedly ordinary arts of eating and drinking well.

The speaker embraces the fall and decay of the present, urging others not merely to fly but, when necessary, to fall faster toward something better.

His deepest disgust is with the recurring 'small man,' whose weary repetition makes knowledge feel suffocating and existence seem devoid of value.

The great disgust at man - it strangled me and had crept into my throat: and what the soothsayer had presaged: "All is alike, nothing is worthwhile, knowledge strangles."

The Convalescent's New Lyre

Zarathustra is overwhelmed by disgust at humanity, seeing even the greatest person as small and the eternal return of the “smallest man” as a burden on existence.

Better know nothing than half-know many things! Better be a fool on one's own account, than a sage on other people's approbation!

Zarathustra encounters a trembling old man, whom he assumes to be the higher man responsible for the cry of distress.
The old man is so convulsed by suffering that he seems unaware of Zarathustra, isolated from the entire world.

"O Zarathustra, I am weary of it, I am disgusted with my arts, I am not great, why do I dissemble! But you know it well - I sought for greatness!"

Seekers Without Masters

The magician admits that he has been searching for Zarathustra himself, whom he regards as genuine, honest, wise, and great.

Now, however, am I out of service, without master, and yet not free; likewise am I no longer merry even for an hour, except it be in recollections.

The Old Pope’s Grief

An old pope arrives in the forest seeking Zarathustra, after discovering that the saintly hermit he served has died, mourned by two wolves.

Bridges to Higher Men

Zarathustra’s Supper

Beyond the Marketplace

And if great things have been a failure with you, have you yourselves therefore - been a failure? And if you yourselves have been a failure, has man therefore - been a failure?

The Wisdom of Laughter
